Assignment 4: Recommendation for Dutch situation

Assignment 4: Recommendation for Dutch situation
Critical consideration in the Netherlands applicable code of professional social worker and the tension that the yield with the international practice.

The international definition of social work : The social work profession promotes social change, problem solving in human relationships and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance well- being. Utilizing theories of human behavior and social systems, social work intervenes at the point where people interact with their environment. Principles of human rights and social justice are fundamental to social work.

International guidelines for professional conduct social work:
- obligation of expertise
- not cooperate with inhumane purpose
- no accommodate
- no abuse of power
- compassion, empathy, care
- self profession accommodate
- confidentiality
- responsibility
- more work on education
- promote ethical decisions

The Dutch professional code: The function of the work is to support people in solving problems and dealing with disturbances in their function and interact with their social environment. The social worker seeks assistance with his social function of persons or the interaction between people and their environment to improve. The realization of this goal is a joint activity of the social worker and the person.

If I look to the international and Dutch definition of social work then I think there is a focus on systems theory. No attention is paid to look at the individual himself but focuses particularly on the systems of the client. More needs to be looked at the psychodynamic functioning of a person. The social worker will be responsible for representing the possible unconscious side to the functioning of a person and for the possible unconscious side of the malfunction. To  a person and for the ambivalences and contradictions that are present in feelings and needs of the client. It is mainly about raising awareness if the client. What is going on and how does the client solve that. Show that the problem is not solves by the social worker but y the client itself.

The student from the Netherlands  they should pay more attention to the different norms and values of other cultures. As their get a client such as Africa then you knows how to act into account with his values. I think the social worker should have a broad of knowledge of social cultural formation.
When I look to America and Italy, students are better trained as social workers. After the higher vocational education, you can then go to university for you to specialize. I think that the Netherlands should have this option. As a student you have possibility to go other directions such as psychologist but not a specialist social work. I find that the student should have the choice to specialize in occupational social, medical social work, school social work etc. In the Netherlands, if you finished you training you need to look anywhere but to work as a social worker and with luck you will be adopted. The reason for most rejections is that students of social work is not enough experienced experts.

If I look at the professional ethics, it is also about the moral choices about how to deal with the profession itself. In terms of profiling the organization and to society. So I propose that from the professional ethics course is that social workers actively contribute to a good image of the profession. Profiling the profession is actually an alert task is to show that there are people in our society that temporary helping hand social need, that they own are. It is also important that the image of the work is correct.

My critique goes mainly to the training of social workers. It is not so much aimed at the professional code but I think more attention should be paid to the specialization for social workers.
