Allesandro is an
social worker from Italy who I had an interview with.
He is not a social worker at academic level as well he is not a researcher. He
is working at a public sector. Alessandro and I had an discussion about the
differences in our countries. .
Currently, for
those who concern the social work formation, in Italy there is a first level
degree (bachelor?, triennal) and a second level degree
(postgraduate, recently defined as "magisterial", biennal). Those who possess a first level degree
in social work “or other similar degrees, can enroll in postgraduate courses in
social work." In 2006 38 Universities offered the first level degree and
34 universities offered the second level; only two faculties allowed "the
prosecution of studies through research doctorates in social work" .For
those who concern the social work profession, only a graduate in social work
that take the state exam and, consequently, enroll in the INASW (Italian
National Association of Social Worker), can practice the profession of social
worker and can carry out professional activities in public and private
facilities that provide services to individuals, in social and human services
and organizations of the third sector. Depending from the graduation level,
exist two kind of access to the INASW:
• by the “A” section of the register of social
workers, taking the related state exam for those who gained the second level
degree;
• by the “B”
section of the register of social workers, taking the related state exam for
those who gaine the First level degree .
The social
worker in Italy isn’t the only social profession; as well as social worker we
know: the professional educator (educatore professionale), the social
sanitary worker (operatore socio sanitario), and the family care (assistente
familiare). They all, works together, depending from the individual support
plan on behalf of the client. The social worker, generally, is the “director”
of other social profession.
First level degree social workers, are currently employed in a quite
large variety of fields: from the public sector (social services of
municipalities, public health services, services for jailed people, ...) Ito
the private sector (for example motor company as FIAT group) or third sector
(as cooperatives, Foundations, religious institutes,).In Italy, employment
could follow the way of the public exam or the private evaluation,

the sector of employment. So, pass the state exam and have been registered in a professional register
is the key to become a professional SW. Remain the possibility to have been
registered in the “A” or “B” section of the register, depending from the degree
level of each SW. Synthetically, the difference between those social workers
admitted to the “A” or “B” section is that the first one “operate in facilities
for human services with roles that imply a high level of responsibility and
autonomy". In practice, the second level degree course and the related
admission to the “A” register of social workers, may give the opportunity to
accede at management/coordination role in social service.
In Holland we
have both exams in order to get one degree. Social work in Italy seems to be
defined in two ways: or full theoretic studies or full practical studies why
can’t they have both? Holland workers should stand up for the social work; we
also have to show the community that we also have a very important task to do.
Acknowledge for the profession is very important in the field. The advantage
that we Dutch people have is that we do not have to take an exam twice in order
to have both (theory and practical information) In Holland we get both in all
our years of high school study. Also we can get to work with all the
instruments we are given to at the time of our study.
The normative aspect that plays in Italy is An elementary distinction
could be based on the fact that in Italy the first provide services for social
problems (frail people and families) and the second provide care for illness
are already realized. Problems for the profession.

The similarities that exist between those countries is, that the social
disciplines works together. The varieties of social work in Italy. All the
workers with an social prefession works together in Italy, depending from the
individual support plan on behalf of the client. In Holland we also work
together with different disciplines on behalf of the client.
